Multiple deliveries

The worldwide tendency is to prevent the birth of twins, triplets or more. This is due to the significant rise in perinatal mortality and risks to the health of newborns, resulting from preterm deliveries, mainly extremely premature babies (under 32 weeks gestation). In the chapter “Exercise of probability of birth”, we can appreciate the the chance of birth and the risk of multiple gestation by transferring 1, 2 or 3 embryos.

Is it so important to reduce multiple deliveries? Is it not preferrable to have two babies at the same time, and not go through such stress if we want to have more than one baby?

Very often, twin deliveries result in healthy children, who are a celebration for the whole family; however, multiple deliveries mainly have two negative effects. As it can be seen in Figure 14, the so-called perinatal mortality rises, which is the sum of the fetuses that die inside the uterus, and others that die within the first week after birth. Moreover, premature deliveries (under 37 gestational weeks), and extremely premature (under 32 gestational weeks) increase, which bring along numerous problems associated to immaturity at birth.
